Cochear Implant Cartoon. Tired of that issue?

Hey. I know some people are tired of Cochlear Implant issues. But this is the only cochlear implant cartoon I have in many years. I kept seeing my original one in my flat file almost every time I looked for a collection of artwork. I couldn't help but find the picture of ants fascinating. I wanted to get it over with by posting that cartoon in my blog so I could move on with other cartoons regarding different deaf-related themes. Better now than later.

Happy Easter & Sign 4 Jesus

Hey. I hope you have a good Happy Easter. I have decided that I will go to church tomorrow morning. I believe that I will feel better afterwards with a good spirit from God. Recently I did a quick sketch of the sign for Jesus. I did it for about 15 minutes. Took a photo of my hands signing “Jesus”. Drew the picture while I was studying the photo print.

Read it here if you are interested. I wanted to share the word of God with you. Easter is a special day because it is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He died for our sins on the cross on Good Friday. Jesus was buried on that day and rose from death on Sunday. Tomorrow I will join people at church to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.

St. Patrick's Day Greetings

Hey. I wanted to say Happy St. Patrick’s Day to people. I decided to create a greeting cartoon for my blog at the last minute—the night before St. Patrick’s Day. I started with rough sketches, drawing a picture of a bear holding a mug and signing “Beer”. But I wanted to add a character that said something related to St. Patrick’s Day. I sketched a female Leprechaun character signing “Kiss me, I’m Irish”. Nah, more work for a little time, so I dumped her. I looked back at the bear with the mug. The idea of the sign “beer” bothered me a little. Kind of not appropriate. That greeting is for anyone, including kids. That idea was thrown out. But after studying the sketches quickly, I made another draft of the same bear only with the same sign originally used for that (sexy) Leprechaun character. Not bad. I did the final cartoon above.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Celebrate responsibly.

Bored Fish Cartoon

Hey. It is now 1:45 a.m. I wanted to add another cartoon in my blog. I quickly looked for an interesting one and found it. I immediately thought of editing the caption – something catchy.

This cartoon was first published in SIGNews a few years ago. The original caption stated, “Hey! I’m bored. Please show me more signs!” Now here is the new caption for this blog. Enjoy it.

Now I am getting ready to go to bed. Good night. Peace.

Marlee Matlin starring in a movie

Hey. I got an email from a friend. It interested me so I thought I should share an announcement with some of you who are Marlee Matlin fans or into a cochlear implant controversy ... or you simply do not know about it.

Here is the announcement:

CBS will have movie called "Sweet Nothing In My Ear" played by Marlee Matlin on April 1, 2008

Playwright Stephen Sachs has adapted his original play, Sweet Nothing In My Ear, for a Hallmark Hall of Fame television movie set to air on CBS in April. The television version of Sweet Nothing, now shooting, is directed by Emmy Award-winning Joseph Sargent and stars Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin and Golden Globe winner Jeff Daniels.

In Sweet Nothing in My Ear, Laura, who is deaf, and Dan, who is hearing, are an attractive young couple happily married for nine years. Their son Adam was born hearing, but by age six has also become deaf. When Dan decides to pursue the possibility of a cochlear implant for his boy - a tiny computer chip inserted in the brain that would allow him to regain his hearing - a divisive wedge is driven between husband and wife that threatens to shatter their marriage.

Bling-Bling Videophone Necklace Cartoon

This is a spot cartoon that I created for fun. I did it because there was an exciting news about a new videophone device called VPAD . A few weeks ago the announcement of the VPAD got the attention of the Deaf community and deaf, hard of hearing, & hearing individuals—including myself. I had to think of a cartoon related to that videophone device for SigNews. I did one and submitted a humorous artwork to that publication recently. But another idea for the cartoon popped in my mind. I decided to share this with you. It is a combination of a heavy gold chain and a portable, wireless videophone device wore by a hip-hop urban guy. He can go anywhere, show off his bling-bling thang, and holler at somebody on vp.

Hope you had a good Martin Luther King Day today. Peace.

My First Blog

Hey. What’s up? Welcome to my very first blog. I am new to writing blog posts but not to my reading on people’s blogs. I have been looking at many different vlogs and blogs mostly from d/Deaf and ASLian (a new informal word I just learned—meaning ASL user) peoples and I love & kiss-fist them. Deafread has inspired me so much that I created my own blog last month. I wanna try vlog. No promise but one day I would like to try a vlog from my Macbook with a built-in cam.

Let me tell you a little about myself. I am Shawn from Baltimore, MD. I have 2 cats. No human children. Not married. I work as a graphic artist for a magazine. I love arts and have been doing art pieces since I was a little boy. I currently draw cartoons for SIGNews—a monthly newspaper serving the signing community. I have enjoyed looking at deaf-related cartoon sites like Deaf Cartoon Blogs, moeart.com/blog, and www.mdaigletoons.com.

I thought you might like to see one cartoon below that I drew for a newsletter named The AAAD Bulletin – the publication of American Athletic Association of the Deaf (now USA Deaf Sports Federation). It was printed in 1994. It was one of my earliest paid published cartoons.

Many thanks for checking out my blog. Peace.
